Onion Chutney, side dish for Idli/Dosa/Uttappa

Ingredients:

Pearl Onion (preferable) / big onion – chopped into small pieces
Tomato – 1, diced
Dry Red Chilies
Tamarind
Roasted Urad dal – 1 tbsp
Fresh Coconut – 1 or 2 inch piece
Salt

Instructions:
  • Heat a small frying pan and roast the urad dal and red chilies in low flame until slightly brown in color
  • Transfer it to a small chutney mixer-jar and add 1 or 2 tbsp oil to the same kadai
  • Add the chopped onion and saute until slightly brownish in color, transfer to the jar
  • Then add the diced tomato and saute for few minutes
  • Now transfer it to the jar along with a small piece of tamarind, salt and chopped fresh coconut
  • Add little water and grind into a smooth chutney
  • Serve with Idli/Dosa/Uttappa/Paniyaram (appe)/Adai dosai etc.
